The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has called on staff of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) to uphold integrity and transparency in their revenue mobilization duties.
This appeal was made during a sensitization meeting held on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the NRA Conference Room in Bo, where ACC officials highlighted the importance of ethical practices in the nation’s revenue generation efforts.
During the session, Abdulai Saccoh, Senior Public Education Officer of the ACC, emphasized that revenue mobilization plays a critical role in financing government projects, including infrastructure and human capital development.
He warned that corrupt practices, such as undervaluing goods at customs points, leaking sensitive information to businesses, and improper monitoring of Goods and Services Tax (GST) machines, could seriously hamper the government’s ability to meet the growing socio-economic needs of Sierra Leone’s citizens.
Saccoh pointed out that diverting national revenue for personal gain stifles the government’s national development plans. He urged NRA staff to take their roles seriously and avoid any actions that could undermine the nation’s financial stability.
Nigle B.E. Davies, the ACC’s Resident Prosecutor, reminded the NRA staff of their legal responsibilities under the National Revenue Authority Act of 2024 and the Anti-Corruption Act of 2008 (amended in 2019).
He highlighted serious offenses, such as corrupt acquisition of wealth, misappropriation of public funds, and conspiracy to commit corruption, warning that any staff found guilty of these crimes could face hefty fines and long-term imprisonment. Davies stressed the need for diligence and warned against engaging in corrupt activities.
Mohamed A. Kabba, ACC Public Education Officer, reiterated that the government heavily depends on revenue generated by the NRA to fund essential projects, such as employment creation, salary increments, and infrastructure development. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, urging NRA staff to maintain integrity in their work and avoid practices that could harm the nation’s economic growth.
In response, NRA Regional Manager Joseph Kelly-Lamin expressed gratitude for the ACC’s efforts in promoting anti-corruption messages and called on his colleagues to adhere to ethical standards. He assured the ACC that the NRA remains committed to meeting and exceeding revenue targets while promoting best practices.
David Garrick, another ACC Public Education Officer, wrapped up the session by encouraging NRA staff to continue their commitment to increasing revenue while maintaining professionalism.
He stressed that integrity is key to the success of any revenue generation initiative and warned staff to avoid any illegal activities that could tarnish their reputations. He also reminded them of the ACC’s toll-free complaint lines for reporting any misconduct.
The session concluded with a question-and-answer period, allowing participants to engage further on the issues raised.
