The Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School emerged as the winner of the 2025 World Environment Day Inter-Secondary School Debate Competition, held at the Family Kingdom Resort.
The school secured first place with an impressive 401 points, outperforming nine other competing schools.
The Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone kicked off World Environment Day (WED 2025) with a week-long celebration that featured a debate competition staged for ten School Nature Clubs in Freetown, arguing for and against the topic: plastic is not the problem, human behaviour is.
With “Ending Plastic Pollution” as this year’s World Environment Day theme, students from ten nature school clubs in Freetown competed for a total of Le 10,000 in cash prizes.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School won with 401 points, followed by the Methodist Boys High School in second place with 399 points, the Prince of Wales in third with 393 points, and the defending winners, WAM Collegiate School, in fourth place with 388 points. The victors received a monetary award of Le 5,000, Le 4,000 for second place, and Le 3,000 for third place.
Furthermore, Speakers from various schools presented their points of view, citing plastic waste as evidence of pollution, improper disposal, gaps in awareness-raising efforts, advocacy for behavioural change communication, enforcement of waste management policies, a lack of recycling opportunities, and the need to investigate alternative containers or storage products.
They demonstrated how human activity and infrastructural inadequacies contribute to plastic pollution. Finally, speakers were given certificates of participation and consolation prizes, which encouraged them to continue their environmental stewardship activities and projects.
The week-long World Environment Day Celebration will continue with an ecotour with our school nature clubs.
Kudos to all Ahmadis
