Ben Kaifala, the Commissioner of Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Commission, has proposed to his fiancée in a culturally traditional and heartwarming way. Kaifala shared the news, revealing that he followed a customary approach, true to his African roots.

He expressed, “As a typical African man, when we see a beautiful FLOWER we want to marry, we do not kneel in the streets or jump and shout around restaurants or some strange venues to ask for her hand in marriage. We send our FAMILY to the other family, and they present a bunch of kolanuts wrapped in banana leaves to them with the message and request.

Kaifala explained the meaningful steps of the tradition, where the woman’s family receives the kolanuts and presents them to her, asking if she accepts the proposal. “They give her the kolanuts to see if she accepts – Bingo! Then the door is open for wedding plans,” he added.

He proudly announced that his fiancée had accepted the proposal, humorously stating, “Anyway, I just wanted to let you know she said ‘YES.’ If you don’t believe, zoom in and see how she grabbed the kolanuts.
