The Bombali District Council has declared Saturday, April 20th, 2024, a General Cleaning Day in preparation for Sierra Leone’s 63rd Independence Day.

A letter issued by the Council on April 17th emphasizes the importance of a clean environment for the upcoming celebration. The seven-hour cleaning initiative aims to ensure the entire district is sparkling for Independence Day festivities.

In a statement, the Council encourages citizens to actively participate by cleaning their surroundings and refraining from open burning. Additionally, vehicles will be readily available to transport collected waste to designated dumpsites.

The Council further emphasizes its commitment to collaboration with the Makeni City Council, local organizations, and law enforcement to ensure successful execution and citizen compliance.

Every year on April 27th, Sierra Leone commemorates its independence from Great Britain in 1961. The country opted for a parliamentary system within the British Commonwealth upon gaining independence.

Sir Milton Margai’s Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) played a pivotal role in leading the nation towards independence and held the first general election with universal adult suffrage in May 1962.
