High Court Judge, Honourable Justice Khalila Diana Kamara, has sentenced Ali Kamara, a Sierra Leonean businessman of Culvert, off Race Course Road in the east end of Freetown, to twenty-five (25) years’ imprisonment for unlawful possession of Kush. On 5th March 2026.
The Defendant, Ali Kamara, now convicted, was charged with Unlawful Possession of Drugs, contrary to Section 8(a) of the National Drugs Control Act No. 10 of 2008, after he was found in possession of 60.4 grams of Kush without lawful authority. Upon arraignment, the Defendant Ali Kamara pleaded guilty to the charge.
According to the laboratory analysis report tendered in court by the Sierra Leone Police and marked as Exhibits E1–E2, twenty (20) wraps bearing unique identification marks were selected from the total exhibit for forensic examination and analysis.
Testifying before the Court, Forensic Laboratory Analyst, Detective Police 13716 Joseph Stevens, confirmed that the samples tested positive for synthetic cannabinoids, with traces of substances including propane 2-1 and phencyclidine identified as active components of the Kush.
Honourable Justice Khalila Diana Kamara stated that offences of this nature pose a serious threat to society and continue to endanger the youth population of Sierra Leone.
“The effects are far-reaching, with alarming consequences that continue to plague the sidewalks and streets of Sierra Leone, leaving behind a trail of a zombified youthful population too inebriated to take their rightful place in nation-building,” Honourable Justice Khalila Diana Kamara said. She emphasized that “a clear, unambiguous, and unequivocal message must be conveyed.”
Having considered the gravity of the offence, the Court found Ali Kamara guilty as charged and sentenced him to twenty-five (25) years’ imprisonment at the Pademba Road Male Correctional Centre.
The Court further ordered that the 60.4 grams of Kush be destroyed by the appropriate authorities in the presence of approved and verifiable witnesses. In addition, a certificate confirming the destruction must be filed with the Court within seven (7) working days from the date of destruction.
