In a statement released by Abdul Fatoma, the Executive Director of the Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI), the organization has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to advancing human rights, transparency, and social justice across Sierra Leone.
Over the years, CHRDI has become a leading force in holding key institutions accountable while advocating for the protection of citizens’ rights.
According to Fatoma, the organization has focused its efforts on ensuring that the country’s Parliament remains transparent in its financial management and governance practices. “We’ve been tirelessly working to hold the country’s Parliament accountable for its transparency and financial management,” Fatoma said, emphasizing the need for greater public oversight over government expenditure and decision-making.
In addition to its work with Parliament, CHRDI has taken significant strides in addressing human rights violations perpetrated by law enforcement agencies.
The organization has spearheaded initiatives to hold the police and military accountable for various abuses. One such case involved legal action against a senior military officer, now a colonel, who was accused of domestic violence.
CHRDI’s intervention in this case highlights its dedication to ensuring that justice prevails, irrespective of rank or position.
CHRDI’s efforts to combat corruption have also seen the organization challenge delays in court cases and take legal action against a government ministry.
The case, brought before the civil high court, involved allegations of abuse of power and interference in the governance of a local university. This legal challenge reflects CHRDI’s determination to uphold the principles of fairness and integrity within Sierra Leone’s public institutions.
A notable milestone in CHRDI’s work is its advocacy for workers’ rights, which has directly benefited over 7,000 citizens across the country.
“This organization has been a powerful force in fighting for workers’ rights in Sierra Leone,” Fatoma noted, acknowledging the positive impact CHRDI has had on the livelihoods of thousands of citizens.
CHRDI’s commitment to social justice goes beyond legal battles. The organization has consistently promoted citizen participation in governance and democracy, working to ensure that individuals across the country have a voice in shaping the future of their communities.
Before the 2023 election, CHRDI played a vital role in promoting negotiation and dialogue between political parties, election management bodies (EMBs), and the public. This effort was aimed at fostering a peaceful electoral process while encouraging collaboration among key stakeholders.
Fatoma took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the dedicated team at CHRDI. “None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the incredible teamwork of the dedicated individuals at our office. I’m genuinely grateful for their hard work and commitment,” he said.
As CHRDI continues its work, it remains a beacon of hope for citizens seeking justice, accountability, and equality in Sierra Leone. With a focus on transparency, human rights, and social justice, the organization is determined to drive positive change in the years to come.
Who is fooling who here? We have sufficient evidence to present to donor partners and the international community about the dirty roles these so called CSO’s play in the violation of the human rights of citizens and the destruction of democracy in Sierra Leone. A good number of them are political party card carriers and have been seen on radio stations talking on behalf of their political parties instead of advocating for the rights of citizens. CHRDI is on record for telling the nation that the June 24th, 2023 multi tier elections are over and we must move on. These are the people we must stop from doing their dirty games and press charges for them to face justice. EVIL SOCIETIES
