A 19-year-old man, Francis Caulker, has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for the sexual penetration of a 15-year-old girl, following a ruling by Justice Adrian Fisher in Freetown.
Politico reports that the court found Caulker, a member of the Faith Healing Bible Church at Devil Hole, guilty last week Friday for persistently assaulting the child, who was also a member of the same congregation.
In his sentencing remarks, Justice Fisher detailed how Caulker had pursued the victim for nearly a year despite her repeated refusals. The judge stated that Caulker ultimately carried out the act on multiple occasions in an unfinished building.
“The way he executed the plan demonstrates the degree of the convict’s planning,” Justice Fisher said, emphasizing the calculated nature of the crime. He added, “There is a reason why children are not permitted to engage in sexual intercourse… you as an adult ought to understand that a child should not be doing that.”
While the court considered Caulker’s plea for mitigation—in which he cited being orphaned and taking his school exams—Justice Fisher stated that the degree of planning meant the court “would not pity the convict.” The 15-year sentence is the minimum punishment provided by law for the offense.
The case was prosecuted by state lawyer Christopher Cole, while the convict was represented by Legal Aid Board lawyer Randy S. Bangura.
In a related ruling, Justice Fisher also sentenced another man, Joshua Kamara, to 18 years imprisonment on a separate count of sexual penetration of a child. The court heard that Kamara, entrusted with escorting the victim to school, exploited that trust to repeatedly assault her. The judge noted that Kamara showed no remorse throughout his trial.
