Magistrate Sahr Kekura of Pademba Road Court No.1 has denied bail to Hassan Turay, who is currently in court for allegations of fuel embezzlement.

In his recent court ruling, Magistrate Sahr Kekura highlighted the serious nature of the charges against Turay as a factor in the decision.

Court documents revealed that on the 19th March, 2025, a local petroleum company entrusted Turay, a resident of No. 7 Access Road in Kissy, Freetown, with 20,000 liters of fuel.

Allegations surfaced claiming that Turay misappropriated a portion of the fuel instead of fulfilling his delivery obligations. Turay has categorically denied those allegations when interrogated.

Turay’s defense attorney, C.W.S. Atarrah, argued in favor of his client’s bail application, stating that Turay is a Sierra Leonean with strong ties to the community and thus does not pose a flight risk.

Atarrah assured the court that there are credible sureties willing to guarantee Turay’s appearance in court. He also asserted that Turay would not influence prosecution witnesses if granted bail.

The attorney stressed on the hardships faced by Turay’s family during his month-long detention, noting that he is a father of three.

To bolster his arguments for bail, Atarrah cited Sections 79 (2) and (3) of the Criminal Procedure Act of 1965 (Act N032). However, Magistrate Kekura remained firm in denying the request, reiterating the severity of the charges against Turay.

The trial has been adjourned and is set to continue on the 30th April, 2025, as the legal proceedings unfold.
