Sierra Leoneans both home and abroad are currently suffering from harsh economic hardship. The people are going through hell of time in Sierra Leone, where many have attributed the recent security breach as a situation that compounded the problem for the ordinary masses.
A nationwide curfew has been declared in Sierra Leone after gunmen attacked the country’s main and military barracks in Freetown, the capital city. The detention center including Pademba road prison holding more than 2000 inmates were attacked just as security forces fought and restored calm.
The curfew instituted by government adds more burdens on ordinary citizens and that many business people have suffered serious setback.
“This is Christmas period where all of us use to do our business and business run fast because of the peaceful climate” he said.
In other to ensure ease of tension in the country, there were growing calls from Member from the public to get rid of the curfew by the government of Sierra Leone.
One of the strong Civil Society activists in Sierra Leone, Musa Jalloh popularly known as JMUS said Section 5 (1) of the 1991 constitution of Sierra Leone says the republic of Sierra Leone shall be a state based on the principles of freedom, democracy and justice.
However, Jalloh stated that as CSO they are in fear that some security will infringe on the constitutional rights of citizens during curfew hours.
He continued that although the curfew is effectively reducing both violent and property crimes and be able to trackdown individuals but measures should be put to ensure that such curfew be reviewed especially at a time when people are preparing for their festive season.
Musa Jalloh is a popular CSO operating an organization called voice of the voiceless, and he has vehemently condemned those who plan the coup.
Jalloh thanked the security apparatus who sacrifices and put the situation under control and also urged all Sierra Leoneans to cooperate with the government and the security forces in their effort to control the situation the country is facing.
“Those who are responsible for these heinous attacks must be held accountable in accordance with due process and the rule of law” Musa Jalloh said.
He also thanked the leaders of political parties for their courage in speaking out against violence, adding that as a civil society activists they are ready to support anything that bring peace in the country.
He assured that they will continue to make sure the country’s democracy all fought for be maintained.
Remember that, all the hard-core criminals are out. Who knows, their next victim? Afterwards there was economy running during the war. And our situation is wretched. Every policy that was put in place after the war were destroyed by our politicians.
It’s not lifting the cofew that will make Sierra Leone, another Dubai.
