Deputy Minister of Defence, Rtd. Colonel Muana Brima Massaquoi, has been honored with the Climate Security Award of the Year by Shout Climate Change Africa for his unwavering commitment to environmental preservation in Sierra Leone.

The recognition was bestowed during the 8th Edition Environmental Care Awards, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown.

Massaquoi expressed gratitude to the Defence Ministry and Armed Forces leadership for supporting environmental initiatives.

He highlighted partnerships with organizations like Shout Climate Change Africa and their involvement in campaigns such as the EU Dish Cleanup and anti-deforestation efforts.

He called for unified action to address climate challenges, emphasizing that sustainability is essential for the country’s future.

Monica Gonzalez of the EU praised local efforts and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting environmental programs in Sierra Leone, including national park preservation and community empowerment. She stressed the importance of collective action to combat climate change.

Chinese Embassy Minister Councilor Zhang Dianbin highlighted global responsibilities in addressing climate change and emphasized the need for financial and technological aid to support Sierra Leone. He cited China’s leadership in green energy as an example of transformative solutions.

UNDP’s Tanzila Watta Sankoh underscored the role of community engagement and resource mobilization in tackling climate issues, urging collaboration for a sustainable future.

The award celebrates Massaquoi’s environmental advocacy and serves as a catalyst for intensified efforts to preserve Sierra Leone’s natural heritage.
