Mohamed Omudu Kamara (Jagaban), a leading flagbearer aspirant of the All People’s Congress (APC), has strongly condemned the remand of the party’s National Secretary General, Lansana Dumbuya, describing the action as a threat to democratic space and political freedom in Sierra Leone.
In a public statement titled “Democracy Is Not a Crime,” Kamara said he was deeply concerned by the decision to remand Dumbuya, stressing that political expression should never be treated as a criminal act. He stated that opposition activities are protected by the Constitution and must be respected in a democratic society.
Kamara said democracy cannot thrive where dissent and opposition are criminalised. He emphasized that the rule of law should protect democratic space rather than weaken it, and called on state institutions to act with neutrality, restraint, and full respect for due process. According to him, justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.
The APC flagbearer aspirant also appealed for fairness and transparency in the handling of the matter. He said Sierra Leone belongs to all its citizens and that state institutions have a duty to serve everyone equally, without fear or favour.
Addressing APC supporters, Kamara urged calm, discipline, and peaceful conduct. He warned against provocation and said the party’s strength lies in unity, maturity, and lawful engagement. He reiterated that the APC stands for justice, free expression, and democracy.
Kamara concluded by calling for dialogue over intimidation, saying the country must always choose democratic engagement over fear. His statement was signed in his name, Mohamed Omodu Kamara, popularly known as Jagaban, and issued in response to the remand of the APC National Secretary General.
