Iconic rapper Shadow Boxxer has argued that while Kao Denero’s contributions to the country’s music scene are undeniable, Drizilik has earned the title of Sierra Leone’s top hip-hop artist due to his hard work and rising influence.

The rapper’s statement has stirred a major online debate among hip hop fans.

Shadow Boxxer, known for his deep understanding of Sierra Leonean hip-hop, voiced his opinion in a candid reflection on the state of the genre. He made it clear that while Kao Denero is a legendary figure whose impact cannot be overlooked, the crown for the current top artist should go to Drizilik, who, according to Boxxer, has made significant strides in both local and international arenas.

In his statement, Shadow Boxxer stressed that Kao Denero and LAJ were both integral to shaping the foundation of Sierra Leone’s hip-hop scene, noting their skills and contributions as part of Black Leo’s influential camp.

They are forever etched in the history books of Salone hip hop,” he said, referring to the duo’s lasting impact. However, Boxxer was quick to point out that the most iconic hip-hop artist in Sierra Leone’s history, according to his view, is LAJ, describing him as “a mile ahead” of others due to his unique presence in the genre, regardless of his lyricism.

Despite his respect for Kao Denero’s legacy, Shadow Boxxer argued that the current landscape of Sierra Leonean hip-hop belongs to Drizilik, who has rapidly gained a massive following both within Sierra Leone and beyond. “Drizilik is the top dog,” Boxxer declared. He pointed to Drizilik’s strong performance in terms of audience engagement and musical output, particularly noting the artist’s growing presence outside of Sierra Leone. “There is data to back Drizilik’s dominance outside of Salone,” Boxxer added, reinforcing the artist’s success on international platforms.

While praising Drizilik’s success, Shadow Boxxer also highlighted a paradox within the Sierra Leonean hip-hop scene. He criticized the internal division that prevents many from fully supporting Drizilik, even though he has become a national figure. “He’s yours, I mean Sierra Leone’s. Hailing him hails you,” Boxxer remarked.

Boxxer also took a moment to discuss the challenges of comparing artists across different styles, acknowledging that Drizilik may not be known for his lyrical prowess in the same way as more traditional MCs. However, he made it clear that Drizilik’s artistic presence and ability to captivate audiences have earned him the respect he deserves.

Shadow Boxxer concluded by calling for a balanced view, urging the public to recognize both Kao Denero’s monumental contributions to Sierra Leonean hip hop and Drizilik’s ongoing efforts. “Give Kao his respect and due, he’s earned it ten times over,” he said. “But give Drizilik the crown because he’s worked hard for it and earned it as well.”
