All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearer aspirant Dr. Ibrahim Bangura on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, paid a solidarity visit to the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) following a fire outbreak that destroyed equipment worth millions of leones at its headquarters in Freetown.

The fire, which occurred on April 8, engulfed the top floor of the SLBC building, including the office of the Deputy Director General, Mohamed Asmieu Bah. The incident caused extensive damage, destroying laptops, desktop computers, television monitoring screens, chairs, mobile phones, cash, and important official documents.

During the visit, Dr. Bangura expressed sadness over the incident and called on the management to remain prayerful. “This is sad and I must say I felt the pain as a Sierra Leonean. I know the critical role the media plays in shaping society,” he said, adding that “God almighty has answers to every challenges.

He emphasized that his visit was driven by empathy rather than politics. “Despite me being a politician, it is necessary to show sympathy and empathy to a state broadcaster whenever it is necessary,” Dr. Bangura stated.

As part of his support, Dr. Bangura donated five thousand United States dollars and two laptop computers to the corporation to assist in its recovery efforts.

Receiving the donation, SLBC Director General Josephine Kamara thanked Dr. Bangura and his team for the gesture. She described the visit as a sign that the institution is valued, noting that SLBC will “remain the true voice of the people in disseminating information and pivotal issues of national interest.”

Deputy Director General Mohamed Asmieu Bah also expressed appreciation for the support, saying he was pleased with the assistance and hopeful that such an incident would not recur. He called for continued support to strengthen the institution.

The SLBC, Sierra Leone’s state broadcaster, plays a key role in the country’s media landscape. The fire has raised concerns about operational disruptions, but Dr. Bangura’s intervention is being viewed as a step toward helping the institution recover from the losses.
