On Friday, 19 April 2024, a disturbing incident emerged in Taiama, Kori Chiefdom, Moyamba District, where sellers flooded the local market with expired fish, prompting urgent action from local authorities.

A vehicle, registered as AUZ-218, was caught selling a carton of fish that had been rejected by businesses in Bull for being unfit for consumption.

As the vehicle headed towards Freetown, the driver and apprentice made a controversial decision to stop and auction off the expired fish. This prompted a rush of market women from Taiama and surrounding areas, all eager to capitalize on the low prices, potentially at the expense of community health.

A reporter from local radio stations alerted the public to the unfolding situation, leading some businesswomen to follow the vehicle to an “over bridge ” purchase large quantities of the tainted fish, intending to sell them in local markets.

In response to these alarming developments, local authorities swiftly intervened. They visited the Taiama Main Market, where they halted the sale of the expired fish with immediate effect. Despite this, some market women reportedly attempted to hide their stock, planning to sell it later to unsuspecting consumers.

Local authorities have issued strong warnings against the clandestine sale of expired fish, vowing to arrest anyone caught engaging in these practices. They are also urging consumers to be vigilant and cautious when purchasing fish in the market.

Community leaders are emphasizing the importance of food safety and the need for consumers to be aware of the risks associated with buying expired products. As the investigation continues, the health and safety of the community remain a top priority.
