A man has been sentenced to jail for impersonating an employee of the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA).
Sheku Kamara appeared before Magistrate Sahr Kekura at Pademba Road Court No. 1 facing charges of impersonation, possession of a forged EDSA identity card, altering a forged document, and theft.
According to the prosecution, Kamara was caught posing as an EDSA staff member in Kissy Brook, Freetown, on August 13, 2024. He was visiting households under the pretense of conducting meter readings, but authorities determined he was not authorized to do so.
Investigations revealed that Kamara was in possession of a counterfeit EDSA identity card with the reference number 3738. He was also accused of using the forged card to steal an EDSA pre-paid meter valued at three thousand new Leones from Abdul Munu.
Despite a request for bail from the defense counsel, Magistrate Kekura denied the application, citing the seriousness of the charges. Kamara was remanded in custody and the case has been adjourned to September 9, 2024.
