The Freetown City Council (FCC) has engaged 60 market women, including market Chairladies, drawn from the Kennedy Street, Portee, and Low-Cost markets 20 from each location as part of its ongoing community outreach to promote a cleaner Freetown.

The engagement took place on Tuesday, 2 December.

The session provided an opportunity to explain the importance of the new sanitation byelaws, with discussions focusing on how market women can access reliable waste management information.

Strong emphasis was placed on the 8244 toll-free line as an easy and dependable platform for residents, especially market women, to obtain accurate updates on FCC’s waste management services.

Participants also shared suggestions on how they could collaborate more effectively with the FCC to improve waste management within their markets.

According to the FCC, the engagement aligns with the spirit of the 16 Days of Activism campaign by equipping women with the information and tools needed to make informed decisions, strengthen their agency, and better navigate essential city services.

The session was attended by Councillors Amadu Kargbo, Agnes Marrah—Chairperson of the Market Committee—Hakiratu Maxwell Caulker, Chairperson of the Sanitation Committee; and Augustine Kamara from FCC’s Sanitation Team.

The initiative was supported by The Carter Center through the Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign, implemented by Innovation for Community Resilience Sierra Leone.
