Kenema’s justice system has taken a firm stand against drug abuse, sentencing 48 individuals to prison or fines for frequenting premises used for smoking cannabis.
Principal Magistrate Hadiru Daboh of Magistrate Court No. 1 in Kenema slammed thirty-six months imprisonment against eighteen accused persons at the Sierra Leone Correctional Centre (SLCC) or an alternative fine of Five Hundred New Leones (NLe 500) each.
The accused persons were charged with frequenting premises used for the smoking of Cannabis sativa or Kush.
The incidents reportedly occurred on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Nyandeyama Section, Blama Road, Demby Street, and Kaisamba Terrace in Kenema city.
All 18 pleaded guilty and appealed for mercy. However, Magistrate Daboh discountenanced their plea and slammed alternative sentencing against them.
The prosecution was led by ASP Sulaiman Kamara Esq., while Defence Counsel Adu Foday Esq. represented the female accused and Dauda Gbow Esq. represented the 17th accused.
In a separate hearing, Her Worship Magistrate Wilbri Hamida M. John of Magistrate Court No. 2 sentenced thirty other individuals to two years imprisonment each at the SLCC or an alternative fine of One Thousand New Leones (NLe 1,000).
Prosecutor Inspector Aiah Mafinda Teh told the court that these accused persons were arrested at Ahmadiyya Junction, Dama Road, and Circular Road, areas known for the smoking of Cannabis sativa or Kush.
In total, forty-eight individuals apprehended by the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) in Kenema have been jailed for the drug-related offense of frequenting.
