A high-profile drug case has attracted attention in Freetown as four individuals appeared before Magistrate Sahr Kekura at Pademba Road Court No. 1.

The accused Andrew Momoh Jah, a bike rider, Daniel Kamara, a laborer, Zainab Kamara, a businesswoman, and Thomas Leigh Koroma, an unemployed man are each facing 13 counts connected to the illegal drug known as “kush.”

These charges stem from an alleged incident on November 20, 2024, at No. 66 Kanu Drive, Temne Town, Allen Town, where authorities claim the individuals were caught making kush without the proper legal authorization.

The charges range from manufacturing and distributing illegal drugs to collecting and transporting substances intended for drug production.

During the trial, CID Officer Amara Safiya was cross-examined. M.S. Bangura, defending the fourth accused, Thomas Leigh Koroma, questioned the officer about his experience and the process of obtaining statements from the accused. Officer Safiya confirmed he had been with the police for eight years and that all the accused were informed of their rights before giving statements. However, the officer also admitted he could not recall the specific details of what the accused had said during their statements.

M. Gayvawo, representing Zainab Kamara, also challenged the accusations against his client. Gayvawo argued that Zainab Kamara had simply been at her husband’s apartment during the incident and had no involvement in the alleged drug activities. The defense lawyer also questioned the seizure of 867,000 Leones, suggesting it was part of Kamara’s legitimate business earnings and family support. The officer acknowledged the explanation but stood by the investigation’s findings.

The case has been adjourned to March 18, 2025, for further hearings.
