The GEED Foundation has officially launched the National Coastal Unity Boat Race 2026 at the vibrant Lumley Beach / Aberdeen Beach, marking a significant step towards promoting national unity, youth empowerment, and tourism development in Sierra Leone.

The colorful launch event attracted key stakeholders, including government officials, development partners, youth groups, and members of the public, all gathered along the coastline to witness the unveiling of this landmark initiative.

Delivering his statement, the Chief Executive Officer of the GEED Foundation, Dr. Ekundayo Walton Gilpin, described the boat race as more than just a sporting activity, emphasizing its role in fostering peace, collaboration, and national cohesion among coastal communities.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, highlighted the importance of leveraging Sierra Leone’s rich coastal resources to boost tourism and create economic opportunities for young people.

She noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s vision to promote Sierra Leone as a leading tourism destination in West Africa, while preserving cultural heritage and strengthening community ties.

The National Coastal Unity Boat Race is expected to bring together participants from various coastal districts, showcasing talent, encouraging teamwork, and celebrating the country’s shared identity.

The initiative also aims to promote peace and national cohesion, engage and empower young people, highlight the tourism potential of Sierra Leone’s beaches, and strengthen partnerships across sectors.

The launch concluded with renewed calls for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the success and sustainability of the initiative.
