Healthcare Without Borders has inaugurated a newly constructed Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Post and a six-classroom school building in Helebu Town, Pejeh Chiefdom, Pujehun District.

This impactful project was made possible through collaborations with local and international donors, including Harvard University, and was attended by government officials, chiefdom authorities, community members, and media representatives.

The event was chaired by Professor Bashiru Koroma, Vice Chancellor and Principal of Njala University, who praised Healthcare Without Borders for its unwavering support to the Pujehun District.

Speaking at the ceremony, Program Manager Foday Jaward highlighted the transformative potential of these facilities for one of Sierra Leone’s most underserved regions.

The newly opened MCH Post is designed to provide essential maternal care, child immunization, and basic health services to the surrounding community.

Jaward emphasized that the facility aims to reduce the high maternal and child mortality rates in the district by offering prenatal and postnatal care, ensuring safer pregnancies and healthier outcomes for both mothers and infants.

In addition to the health post, the six-classroom school building is equipped with modern amenities to accommodate hundreds of students from Helebu Pejeh and neighboring communities.

Jaward mentioned that the school is designed to create a conducive learning environment, addressing the challenges of overcrowded classrooms and lengthy commutes for students.

Philip Saffa Momoh, Executive Director of Healthcare Without Borders, underscored the organization’s commitment to holistic community development.

“Access to quality healthcare and education is fundamental to breaking the cycle of poverty. These facilities symbolize hope and empowerment for the people of Helebu Pejeh,” he stated.

Sahr Emmanuel Yambasu, Chief Administrator of Pujehun District Council, expressed gratitude on behalf of the council, emphasizing their mission to deliver services to the people and urging community members to support ongoing development efforts.

Paramount Chief PC Sheku Abdulkadiru Monyaba Koroma described the inauguration as a “dream come true” for his community, noting the importance of having a health post to save lives and a school to secure the future of their children.

Healthcare Without Borders has pledged to continue its support by providing training for healthcare workers and teachers at the new facilities. The inauguration ceremony was marked by cultural performances and concluded with a ribbon-cutting, celebrating a significant milestone for the community of Helebu Pejeh.
