The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL), on August 20th, 2025, at its headquarters, Tower Hill in Freetown, had an engagement with a delegation from the African Union Committee of Experts on Child Protection.

The was engagement was to get first-hand information on the interventions of the Commission in the protection and promotion of children’s rights in Sierra Leone, and for the Commission to share with the delegation follow-ups on matters relating to child marriage and FGM so as to ensure that children’s rights are protected.

Furthermore, the discussions were led by the Executive Secretary, Joseph Kamara. Also in attendance were the Director of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Madam Gloria Bayoh, and some staff from other Directorates.

Senior Social Worker from the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child Secretariat, Madam Catherine Maina, who led the delegation, stated that their mission in Sierra Leone is to track and report on the implementation of child protection frameworks and document key progress implementation experiences, including challenges, lessons learnt, and best practices.

She said they have observed that child participation in Sierra Leone is top-notch, as children are able to express themselves on issues.

Madam Maina added that a report will be put together after the completion of their mission, detailing the country’s progress and commitment made, as well as proposed actions to be adopted by countries.

Both parties discussed extensively issues relating to child marriage, FGM, child protection, corporal punishment in schools, and violence against children.
