Justice Sulaiman Bah of the Siaka Stevens Street Law Court in Freetown has convicted a couple Fatmata Kamara and Allieu Kamara, of manslaughter. The convicts who pleaded guilty were on the 13th of February 2023 arraigned at the High Court sitting at the main Law Court Building in Freetown on one count of the criminal indictment of manslaughter.
According to the particulars of the offence, the convicted couple on 4th November 2012 in Freetown, unlawfully killed Lovetta Turay.
Testifying, the State Prosecutor, Andrew F. Kamara said, the deceased was a married woman who stayed with her husband in the same community together with the convicts.
According to him, on the 4th of November 2012, the first convict, Fatima Kamara got into an argument with the deceased, Lovetta Turay, adding that after the argument, Fatima reported what had transpired between them to her husband.
He furthered that the husband went to inquire from the deceased which then turned into another argument and a fight between the different parties leading to violence and physical abuse.
According to the Prosecuting Counsel, the second convict, Allieu Kamara was not on the scene when the victim died as he had left to report the matter to the police but on his way to the Police, he was arrested with no idea of what had transpired in his absence.
Backed up by Lawyer Andrew F. Kamara, the Court was told that there was no clear evidence as to who threw punches or blows at the deceased that led to her death as there has been no report of the antecedent.
However, Justice Sulaiman Bah sentenced both to ten years jail term.
Both convicts are to serve their sentence separately at the Female and Male Correctional facilities on Jomo Kenyatta Road, and Pademba Road respectively in Freetown.
