A couple has died following a head-on collision between their private vehicle and a fuel tanker along the Mile 91–Bo Road on the night of April 12, 2026, family sources have confirmed.

The victims have been identified as Fatmata Leigh and her husband, Alhaji Adama Sowe. They were traveling to Bo City to attend a naming ceremony when the crash occurred. According to family sources, the impact was devastating, and both died instantly at the scene.

Fatmata Leigh was preparing to complete the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage. The couple is survived by three young children — two sons and a daughter.

Mohamed Asmieu Bah, Deputy Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), confirmed in a social media post that the couple left their home in Freetown around 7:00 p.m. on Friday and were laid to rest on Saturday at the Kissy Road Cemetery.

“They left with the intention of returning, they never knew that the last time they were leaving their home,” Bah wrote. “Driving on our highways at night is a heavy risk.”

The accident has reignited concerns about road safety on Sierra Leone’s highways, particularly nighttime travel on major routes.
