In a shocking turn of events in Lawana Kargboro Chiefdom, Moyamba District, an Imam was brutally beaten almost to death, and houses were vandalized by a group of alleged youths claiming association with the Poro Society.
The incident unfolded when these individuals, alarmed by the Poro Society’s potential emergence on Luma day, disrupted market activities and community life, affecting both economic and school affairs.
Following the disruption, the Imam, during a mosque sermon the next day, condemned the actions of the Poro Society men, emphasizing the need for organized and traditional procedures. Despite being part of the society himself, his religious beliefs prevented his participation.
According to police investigations, around 2:00 am, a group of young men from Yondu, located 5 miles away from Lawana, attacked the Imam, abducted him, and brutally beat his elder brother who attempted to intervene. Women and children were also subjected to violence, with the assailants looting valuables and vandalizing the Imam’s house and his late father’s compound.
After an intense ordeal in the bush, the victims, including the Imam, were eventually rescued and rushed to the Moyamba Government Hospital for medical attention. The Moyamba Police Division swiftly responded, arresting 18 individuals on various charges, including wounding and malicious damage to property.
In a disturbing turn of events, after these initial arrests, another group of men reportedly targeted the village of Kigbal. Allegedly, they destroyed four houses and assaulted a woman, tearing her clothes. The victim has since reported the matter to the Moyamba police station, with some of the key perpetrators still evading capture.
I hope they will teach them, the hard way, this is nonsense and idiot traditions, some serious beating must given to them by the police.
SUBHANALAH.
What a wicked world are we living.
This is totally undone 😢 😭 😿 😢
This people need to be detained by the government properly, they need to be sent to jail
What a wicked world
Some of these comments are coming from people who are not even members of the poro society. Violence for violence is not the answer to this type of problem. In Mende land, you do not joke with the poro or wonde societies. You will only be asking for imminent death and wanton destruction of properties.
May Allah’s punishment be on to those people in this world 🌎 and the hereafter 🙏🙏
IT IS NOT FAIR BUT LET THE LAW TAKE IT COURSE. LET THE VICTIMS BE PUNISH ACCORDING TO THE LAW. MY SYMPATHY TO OUR BELOVED IMAM
These people have given enough and numerous reasons for the abolition of this practice.
This evil and demonic society should be stopped totally in Sierra Leone. We pray that God almighty will soon bring an end to all of this wickedness in Sierra Leone.
This is the right time for the government to take vahiment action against the culprit. if not, they let this case go just like that if it happens for the second time wallahi it will totally evoke to religious fight.
@SierraLoaded would you mind updating us on the progress of this issue?
This is the same problem they bring to politics. Why are they thinking that their society should be above the laws of the land.
May God punishthem the their act.
An imam attacked and beaten! Heyyyyyy waeyyyyyy! The very people who’ll ask the imam to pray for them, lead them in salat, lead them in many forms of their spiritual activities. Let the authorities-state, traditional and local authorities take this issue very serious. We don’t want to disrupt our peaceful coexistence as Sierra Leoneans. I also suggest the United Council of Imams-Sierra Leone benoart of the process of addressing this issue.
Let the police do their investigations while we pray for total peace to return to that part of the country.
These hooligans must be punished. Bravo to Moyamba Police. Keep it up. We will continue to follow this issue to make sure justice is served. Violence has no place in our modern society.
I suspect this will be swept under the carpet very soon.
I suspect this will be swept under the carpet. Trust me.
It will be settled in the poro bush
so do you want to classify it as religious issues,? did they consider any religion A or B there? do you want to tell me that Muslim are not part of that society. be mindful of your word in social media, you blind minded hero.
Let the family of the victims to the hospital or any other area they can seek medication because in that part of the country, nothing will come out of it. Trust me.
These people MUST be burned to death
This is not about society is about the life of the old man, this is why sometime government want to stop this societies,we are nolonger in the dark days where culture is value than the life of an individual, let the law deal with them for others not to follow

What is inter religious Council, the Imam’s Council waiting? I have not seen any press statement from them.
Muslim leaders need to wake up.. soon you will see people using people in leadership position to kill the case. Believers must be united on this. This is the only way to defeat evil.
I pray that the Almighty take control and give strength to the religious leaders to come out and ensure no rogues in society sweep this under the carpet
The Poro secret society holds significant cultural and traditional importance for Sierra Leone, serving as a vital aspect of the country’s heritage and identity. The society plays a crucial role in preserving and transmitting traditional knowledge, values, and practices from one generation to the next. It serves as a source of social cohesion, community bonding, and spiritual guidance for many Sierra Leoneans.
It is essential to recognize that the Poro and Bondo secret societies are deeply ingrained in the fabric of Sierra Leonean society and hold a unique place in the cultural and religious landscape of the country. Attempts to undermine or erase these traditional institutions would not only disregard the rich heritage of Sierra Leone but also disrupt the social fabric and identity of its people.
Religious politicians and external influences should respect and acknowledge the significance of the Poro and Bondo secret societies as integral components of Sierra Leonean culture. These societies are not merely religious or spiritual entities but are symbols of unity, tradition, and cultural pride for the people of Sierra Leone. It is important to understand and appreciate the role that these secret societies play in shaping the identity and heritage of the Sierra Leonean community.
I want to clarify that I do not condone violence against religious leaders, nor do I support any form of physical harm or aggression towards them. It is crucial to promote peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, and understanding between different religious groups and communities.
I also want to emphasize that criticism of the Poro and Bondo secret societies should be approached with sensitivity and respect for the cultural significance and identity they hold for Sierra Leoneans. These secret societies are deeply rooted in tradition, heritage, and community cohesion, and it is essential to acknowledge and respect their role in shaping the identity of Sierra Leoneans.
By fostering open communication, tolerance, and appreciation for diverse cultural practices, we can promote harmony and unity within the Sierra Leonean society while upholding the values of respect and non-violence towards religious leaders who may hold differing views on traditional practices.
Are these not the same secret societies, that runaway in 1991? Afterwards they have been practicing those ritual for a very long time. And they don’t have any good the brought to any community or themselves. Just lies. Hope the security brings them to their senses in jail for a long time.
