The Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) hosted Hon. Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella as the Distinguished Guest of Honour at the inauguration of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Denzel Kalvin Duramany-Lakkoh.
The ceremony brought together students, staff, and both outgoing and incoming union leadership to witness the historic occasion. Dr. Yumkella was warmly received by the IPAM community.
Delivering a keynote address on the theme “Transition and Transformation through Leadership and Service,” Dr. Yumkella encouraged students to lead with courage, integrity, and conviction. He drew on personal experiences from his public service career, highlighting how decisive and consistent leadership enabled him to resolve a national electricity crisis within 14 months. He emphasized the importance of credibility and accountability in effective leadership.

Reflecting on his own background as a former student union president at Njala University, where he once led about 600 students, Dr. Yumkella commended President Denzel Duramany-Lakkoh for the responsibility of leading over 20,000 students at IPAM. He emphasized that leadership is defined not by position, but by responsibility and service to others.
The occasion was described as more than an inauguration, but a moment of inspiration for the next generation of leaders. Dr. Yumkella was celebrated as a nation-builder and reformer whose leadership continues to resonate with young people across the country.
At the end of the ceremony, the SLPP Students’ Union at IPAM presented Dr. Yumkella with a framed portrait as a token of appreciation for his continued support and contribution to student engagement and political awareness.
