The Sierra Leone Government Energy Lead, Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella responded to concerns raised by prominent lawyer, Basita Michael regarding the government’s energy transition initiatives.

Michael had criticised the Sierra Leone government, particularly Yumkella, for their claims of improved electricity generation, expressing scepticism about the government’s achievements.

She highlighted the longstanding trust deficit between citizens and the government due to decades of unreliable power supply and unfulfilled promises in the energy sector, calling for sustainable outcomes and accountability in the energy sector before any celebrations can be warranted.

In his response, Yumkella acknowledged Michael’s scepticism, attributing it to “decades of cosmetic, temporary solutions” that have characterised past efforts in the energy sector.

Yumkella stressed that his team is “cut from a different cloth and forged by a different experience,” highlighting their unique exposure, training, and conviction. He asserted that their commitment to a just and inclusive energy transition is genuine and rooted in “decades of sustained global advocacy.”

To provide a clearer understanding of the government’s plans, he extended an invitation to Michael to attend a comprehensive briefing at the Ministry of Energy on July 7th. He expressed hope that this meeting would offer insights into the structural and systemic reforms the ministry intends to implement.

In his response, Yumkella requested Michael’s prayers and support, urging that they remain focused on their goals despite potential distractions from critics. He stated, “I ask for your prayers and support, that we may remain undistracted by the noise and naysayers as we pursue this crucial transformation.”
