The administration of Kenema Government Secondary School has called on the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education (MBSSE) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to officially recognize one of its students, Mohamed Unpha Koroma, as the best-performing candidate in the 2024/2025 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Koroma reportedly obtained six As and three Bs in the examination. His results were initially withheld by WAEC over concerns regarding their authenticity but were later released following multiple reviews, confirming his performance.

Prior to the release of Koroma’s results, Roseline Mariam Jalloh of Modern Academy Senior School of Excellence was announced as the top-performing candidate in the 2025 WASSCE in Sierra Leone, with four A1s, three B2s, and two B3s, earning a 1.78 GPA. She was followed by Russell Afwa Jemis, who recorded a 1.89 GPA.

In a statement issued by the school authorities, Kenema Government Secondary School described Koroma as an academically outstanding student whose performance throughout his educational career has been exemplary.

The school maintained that Koroma’s WASSCE results place him at the top of the national rankings and, therefore, warrant official recognition by both WAEC and the MBSSE.

“We call on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education (MBSSE) to grant Kenema Government Secondary School the recognition it deserves for producing the best WASSCE candidate in the country for the 2024/2025 academic year,” the statement read.

The school further questioned the process through which national recognition was awarded, calling for a review of any honours already conferred. It argued that failure to recognize Koroma would undermine fairness and credibility within the education system.

The statement also raised broader concerns about integrity in the education sector, alleging that merit is sometimes overlooked. The school urged authorities to ensure transparency and accountability in the recognition of academic excellence.

Kenema Government Secondary School concluded by calling on WAEC and MBSSE to issue a public statement officially recognizing Mohamed Unpha Koroma as the top-performing WASSCE candidate for the 2024/2025 academic year.
