The Koidu City New Sembehun City Council is taking a proactive stance towards a cleaner and healthier city with a comprehensive cleaning initiative launched on February 29, 2024.
Mayor Komba Matthew Sam emphasized the importance of cleanliness in promoting public health, safety, and a sense of community pride. He outlined his commitment to implementing effective waste management strategies, fostering environmental sustainability, and collaborating with residents to maintain a clean and beautiful city.
The initiative will involve residents, businesses, and organizations. Educational campaigns will promote responsible waste disposal practices and environmental stewardship.
The Social and Environmental Officer, Nannah Jalloh Conteh, highlighted concerns about littering, improper waste disposal, and blocked drainages. She urged residents to refrain from such practices and warned of potential fines for non-compliance.
The City Council has bolstered its environmental department with additional staff and pledged to provide necessary equipment and a supportive work environment. The team will be responsible for daily sweeping of major streets and will receive monthly stipends.
The Chief Administrator, Francis M. Tiffa, expressed gratitude to the central government for its ongoing support. He acknowledged the need for more machinery, such as dump trucks, to further enhance the city’s waste management capabilities.
