Kono District has witnessed the launch of the Kono District Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society at the Thomas Saquee Resource Centre on Thursday, February 13, 2025, signaling a new era of economic empowerment for women entrepreneurs in the region.
The initiative, aimed at fostering financial independence among women, comes with an initial donation of NLe500,000 by Hon Musa Tarawally to kick-start the cooperative’s operations.
This funding will provide interest-free loans to women traders within the cooperative, ensuring accessibility without the need for collateral. Beneficiaries are expected to repay the loans to sustain and expand the initiative, allowing more women to benefit over time.
The cooperative seeks to unify and connect women entrepreneurs across Kono District, equipping them with essential financial management skills and promoting self-sufficiency.
The importance of unity among women was a recurring theme during the launch, with stakeholders emphasizing that collective strength is key to fostering peace and prosperity within the community.
The launch event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including the Council of Paramount Chiefs, the District Mammy Queen, the 50/50 Organization, and numerous businesswomen from the district.
Paramount Chief Alhaji Sahr CN Kono Bundu lauded the initiative, noting that empowering women has a ripple effect on the entire community.
District and National Mammy Queen, Madam Tiwa Kelfala Kaimachiande, highlighted the significance of the financial support provided, describing it as a landmark moment for Kono women. She encouraged beneficiaries to utilize the funds wisely to enhance their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
Md. Kumba Daisy Tamba, representing Kono District Women, underscored the importance of financial literacy and urged recipients to prioritize long-term business growth. She stressed that sustainable investment choices would lead to lasting economic benefits for the community.
Specialized training sessions on business management, financial literacy, and cooperative principles were also conducted during the event, providing women with the necessary tools to manage and grow their enterprises effectively. Certificates were awarded to participants, recognizing their commitment to economic self-sufficiency.
The Kono District Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society has been officially recognized by both the District Council and the Freetown City Council, granting it the legal authority to operate nationwide. This initiative sets a significant precedent for women’s economic empowerment in Kono District, offering a pathway to financial independence and sustainable business development.
