The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Tourism, has announced the long-awaited return of the country’s traditional Lantern Float Parade, a historic cultural event set to take place on April 26, 2025.
As part of preparations, the Ministry of Tourism will hold a crucial stakeholder meeting on Saturday, March 8, 2025, to discuss strategies for successfully reviving this vibrant tradition. The meeting aims to engage key players, including cultural groups, artisans, event organizers, and community leaders, to ensure a well-coordinated and impactful return of the parade.
The Lantern Parade, first introduced in Freetown in the 1930s, has long been a cornerstone of Sierra Leonean culture. It was once a beloved tradition that brought communities together to celebrate creativity, artistry, and national pride. Featuring stunningly crafted lanterns of various shapes, sizes, and themes, the event illuminated the streets of Freetown with messages of unity, resilience, and hope.
In its prime, the Lantern Parade was one of Sierra Leone’s most anticipated events, drawing thousands of participants and spectators from all backgrounds. Artisans, designers, and community groups would spend months crafting elaborate lanterns using bamboo, wire, fabric, paper, and colorful lights. The parade became not just a festival of light and color but also a platform for cultural expression and social commentary.
The resumption of the Lantern Parade is expected to reignite national excitement and strengthen cultural identity. Beyond its artistic significance, the event has historically served as a catalyst for economic empowerment, providing opportunities for local artisans, musicians, and small businesses to showcase their talents and products. The competitive nature of the parade fosters skill development, innovation, and healthy rivalry among participants.
Moreover, the Lantern Parade symbolizes unity, bringing together people from different communities, religions, and backgrounds in a shared spirit of celebration. Its return is seen as an effort to promote social cohesion, reinforce Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage, and boost national tourism.
Reviving the Lantern Parade is a bold step towards preserving Sierra Leone’s rich cultural traditions and promoting the country as a key cultural tourism destination. The festival is expected to attract both locals and international visitors, offering a unique opportunity to experience the creativity, craftsmanship, and joyous spirit of Sierra Leoneans.
As preparations continue, there is growing anticipation that the 2025 Lantern Parade will be a grand spectacle, showcasing the best of Sierra Leonean artistry and reinforcing the nation’s commitment to honoring its past while embracing the future.
It is a very good news to we the citizens as we have missed a lot in the past years.
Thank you Madam Minister for reintroducing our long historic culture.
May Allah Continued to guide our leaders and make Sierra Leone a better place for every Sierraleonean.
