A tragic accident occurred on Monday evening when two fully loaded oil tankers belonging to Gold Tree Company capsized at the Moyawa Bridge crossing, resulting in significant financial losses.
The incident took place on 14th July 2025, as the tankers attempted to navigate a temporary bypass created for ongoing bridge repairs. The original Moyawa Bridge, which connects Daru town to the company’s operational base, has been criticized for its poor condition, raising safety concerns among residents.
As the tankers maneuvered through the muddy and uneven bypass, they lost balance, leading to one vehicle overturning completely. This resulted in a punctured tank and the spillage of dozens of oil drums, with losses estimated in the millions of leones.

“This is heartbreaking,” said Moinina Fatorma, Youth Chairman of Jawie Chiefdom and a staff member at Gold Tree. “So many of us rely on this company. An accident like this affects not just the business, but families, young people; the entire town feels it.”
Gold Tree Company Ltd. notably plays a crucial role in local palm oil production, employing hundreds of individuals in Daru and surrounding areas. The job opportunities provided by the company are vital for many families, helping them meet basic needs such as food and education.

Concerns are now mounting regarding the company’s ability to recover from the loss of valuable products and potential disruptions to its operations.
The Kailahun District Council recently initiated efforts to reconstruct the long-criticized Moyawa Bridge, a move welcomed by residents. However, Monday’s accident reflects the dangers posed by inadequate temporary infrastructure.
