Residents of Lungi in the Kaffu Bullom chiefdom, Port Loko district have expressed concerns over what they described as an ‘uncontrolled sand mining’ on the beaches within the chiefdom.
Residents say with the destructive way that sand is being mined on the beaches of Lungi town, especially the Mahera beach, it is only a matter of time before a very flood causes massive destruction for those who have built close to the beach area and beyond.
They are concerned that a large number of trucks collect sand from the beaches every day with impunity.
This ugly development, the residents say, has begun to bring down concrete fences erected to guard private properties close to the beach.
The residents say the uncontrolled sand mining has completely killed Tourism in the Lungi area as the beach itself is filled with debris from the sea with limited sand to sit on.
The residents have called on the relevant authorities to come to save the beach by controlling the sand mining.
