Magistrate Betty Kallon of Magistrate’s Court No. 3 has sentenced Kawusu Tarawally to 60 months (five years) imprisonment at the Male Correctional Centre after finding him guilty on multiple counts of obtaining money by false pretence.
Police told the court that in 2024 at Boli Street, Kingtom, the convict dishonestly obtained large sums of money from several individuals through false representations. According to the prosecution, Tarawally collected Le 221,745 from Basie Ahmed after falsely claiming he would collaborate with him to purchase goods for supply to the National Revenue Authority (NRA), knowing the claim to be untrue.
Further investigations revealed that the convict also obtained $17,000 from Ramadan Zahat and $10,000 from Mohamed Ahmed Ahmed under similar fraudulent claims.
The matter was prosecuted by Sergeant Kamara M, who charged Tarawally with five counts of obtaining money by false pretence, contrary to Section 32(1) of the Larceny Act of 1961. The prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
In delivering judgment, Magistrate Kallon ordered Tarawally to refund the stolen monies to the victims before the conclusion of the proceedings.
The court ruled that failure to comply with the refund order would result in the convict serving the full 60-month sentence at the correctional centre.
