Brima Kargbo, a driver, has been remanded in custody for allegedly stealing from a blind and homeless woman in Freetown. Kargbo appeared before Magistrate John Manso Fornah on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, facing serious charges of larceny.
The alleged incident took place on May 28, 2025, along Freetown Road in Lumley, where Kargbo is accused of pilfering a Techno Spark 20 mobile phone valued at NLe 3,000, a plastic bag containing twenty cups of rice worth NLe 100, and NLe 100 in cash, totaling NLe 3,200. The stolen items belonged to Aminata Taylor, who lives on the fringes of society.
In a touching testimony, Police Prosecutor Sergeant Theresa Ballay led Taylor, the first prosecution witness, through her account of the incident. Taylor, who is blind and homeless, explained that she usually sleeps in front of Zenith Bank with her son. On the morning of May 28, as rain poured down, Kargbo reportedly approached them, taking advantage of their vulnerable state while they slept.
The theft was brought to light when a vigilant cleaner from Zenith Bank noticed something amiss and raised the alarm. Kargbo attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended by a security guard. Upon waking, Taylor discovered her belongings missing and was pointed towards Kargbo, who had her button phone in his pocket.
During cross-examination, Kargbo questioned Taylor about whether she had seen him commit the theft. Taylor, affirming her blindness, stated she could not directly witness the act but insisted that her phone was indeed found with him.
Magistrate Fornah denied Kargbo bail, ordering him to be remanded at the Male Correctional Centre in Freetown. The case has been adjourned, with the next hearing scheduled for June 25, 2025.
