A local man in the MCM community in Makeni was found dead on Saturday.
Reports reaching us indicated that the man committed suicide by handing in the bathroom of their bungalow located in the northern city.
The actual cause of the incident is currently being investigated by police as neighbours were left in complete surprise.
However, experts believe that suicide could be committed under circumstances including previous suicide attempt, financial problems, criminal problems and depression.
In 2023, Partners in Health (PIH) together with the government launched a toll-free helpline to assist and refer victims suffering from mental health. The INGO said in barely five months, a remarkable 430 people called seeking help. “Such a helpline was much needed in Sierra Leone,” PIH said.
Although Sierra Leone suffered from a 10-year civil war which ended in 2002, suicide is uncommon despite people in post-war countries often suffer from post-traumatic stress or disorder. Locals in the West African nation are considered quite resilient to pick up from such a thorny decade in their history.
But with the country grappling with drug addicts due to narcotics called Kush, this could change in the foreseeable future.
