An elephant has attacked a man in Karene District, raising fresh concerns about the growing human-wildlife conflict in the area.

The National Protected Area Authority (NPAA) reported that Mohamed Kamara, a resident of Yembere village in Duguta section, was attacked on August 15, 2024, within the boundaries of the Outamba Kilimi National Park, located in the Upper Tambaka Chiefdom.

The NPAA expressed deep concern and sympathy for Kamara, who is currently receiving medical treatment at Kamakwie Government Hospital. The incident highlights the delicate balance between wildlife conservation efforts and the safety of local communities living near protected areas.

In response to the incident, the NPAA is working closely with Chiefdom stakeholders to address the situation and ensure the safety of residents. The Authority has launched a preliminary investigation into the attack and is closely monitoring Kamara’s condition.

The NPAA has also urged residents and partners in the chiefdom to avoid spreading misinformation regarding the incident. The Authority emphasized the importance of accurate information as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
