Reportedly, 33 year old masoner, Alie Kamara, has been sentenced to a 12 months jail term for the theft of iron rods valued at Le 12,045 from a local resident, Fatima Reider.

The sentencing took place at the Pademba Road Court No.1, presided over by Magistrate Sahr Kekura, where Kamara faced charges under the Larceny Act of 1916.

The incident occurred on Saturday, 8th February, 2024, at Reider’s home, situated opposite the U.S. Embassy in the Mountain Rural District. According to court documents, Kamara was accused of stealing 31 lengths of 1/2-inch iron rods, which constitutes a significant loss for the victim.

The prosecution outlined that Kamara, who has no previous criminal record, was apprehended shortly after the theft was reported. In court, he pleaded guilty to the charges without legal representation. Prosecutor Sergeant 8975 Bangura I.S provided details of the case, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense while noting the defendant’s lack of a prior record.

During the proceedings, Kamara appealed for leniency, conveying remorse for his actions and acknowledging their repercussions for Reider and the community. Magistrate Kekura considered both his guilty plea and his request for a lighter sentence before making a ruling. The Magistrate ultimately sentenced Kamara to 12 months in the Pademba Road Male Correctional Centre in Freetown, with an alternative option to pay a fine of Le1,000 to avoid imprisonment.

The case has reportedly drawn attention to issues of theft within the community of Fatima Reider, highlighting the need for continued efforts to enhance safety and security.
