Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has stated that the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) will only fully re-engage in governance processes if the appointment of Edmond Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner is reversed.
Speaking in an interview on Liberty Online TV, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr explained that the APC’s withdrawal from certain governance activities is a democratic step aimed at expressing the party’s deep dissatisfaction with the current political situation.
She stressed that the move should not be interpreted merely as a political tactic, but rather as a principled stance to draw attention to issues the party believes threaten democratic governance in the country.
According to the Freetown Mayor, the issue goes beyond the interests of the APC and raises broader concerns about the future of democracy in Sierra Leone.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr further noted that the APC considers the appointment of Edmond Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner to be a disregard for previous agreements reached among political stakeholders.
She emphasized that resolving the dispute is an important step toward rebuilding trust and restoring confidence among key political actors.
The Mayor concluded that addressing the concerns surrounding the appointment is necessary to create the conditions under which the APC can fully resume its participation
