Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) has recently entered the battle to secure the nation’s food independence. Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, spearheaded a significant initiative, collaborating with the military in a critical step towards self-sufficiency.
The Minister, accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Defence, visited the military rice farm spanning an impressive 350 acres in Mano Dasse. This visit marked a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s quest for food autonomy, as it showcased the concerted efforts of government bodies towards enhancing local food production.
Commencing in 2024, Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) institutions are set to pivot towards cultivating or procuring local rice to meet the dietary requirements of the nation. This strategic move aims not only to reduce dependency on external sources but also to elevate the agricultural sector’s prominence in the country’s economy.
The joint venture between the RSLAF and the Ministry of Agriculture symbolizes a proactive approach to harnessing the nation’s resources and expertise. By leveraging the military’s capabilities and resources, such as the extensive land in Mano Dasse, Sierra Leone is taking significant strides in the direction of self-sustainability.
This concerted effort aligns with the global push for self-reliance and sustainability in food production. Sierra Leone’s proactive step to ensure food security is not only a crucial national development but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for other nations facing similar challenges.
The amalgamation of defense and agricultural forces underlines the nation’s determination to fortify its food sovereignty and marks a critical turning point in Sierra Leone’s journey towards self-reliance in food production.
