The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, in collaboration with Save the Children, has stepped up to provide support for five orphaned children after the tragic murder of their mother.
Doris Mansaray, the Assistant Director of Child Protection in Kailahun, confirmed that the children’s stepfather is the prime suspect in their mother’s death, who allegedly killed their mother out of jealousy.
Following the incident, community members reportedly discovered the victim’s body buried in an abandoned pit. The suspect, who attempted to flee to Guinea, was apprehended by local authorities and is currently in police custody.
In response to the horrific event, the Ministry, together with Save the Children, acted swiftly by tendering their support to ensure the immediate safety of the orphaned children. Initially placed under protective custody, the children have reportedly been transferred to the Kailahun Interim Care Centre where they receive appropriate care.
Further report confirmed that the Save the Children provided transportation services and dignity kits to assist the children during their difficult time, while the Raining Season Children’s Home in Freetown has also contributed valuable support.
Following their relocation, Mrs. Joyce Kamara, the Director of Children’s Affairs, expressed her determination to ensure the children receive further protection by relocating them to Freetown.
Upon their arrival at the interim care facility, Mrs. Kamara, along with senior protection officers Basiru Thullah and Daniel Albert Gbow reportedly assessed the children’s condition and confirmed that they were stable.
It was also reported that the Ministry was actively providing essential services including food and foster care to promote the children’s well-being. “The children are now stabilized, and we have provided psychosocial support and counseling to help them cope with this traumatic experience,” stated Mrs. Kamara.
She also expressed gratitude towards Save the Children and the Raining Season Children’s Home for their assistance, emphasizing the Ministry’s commitment to the safety and protection of vulnerable children.
Crucial support from Assistant Director Daniel Albert Gbow and Senior Protection Officer Bashiru Thullah has been instrumental in overseeing the children’s transition to care.
The Ministry expressed continuous supports to maintain collaboration with development partners such as Save the Children and Domakeh to ensure ongoing care and support for affected children.
The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs has reiterated its dedication to child protection and actively addresses issues of child welfare and safety throughout Sierra Leone.
Thank to MOGCA kailahun District for the intervention, hope the ministry will do recruitment so that more people will be available to do the work
