A stakeholder meeting was held on 27th September 2025 at Makonde Court, Baray, to address rising crime and drug-related issues in Njala Makonde and surrounding communities.

The meeting was chaired by the Honourable Member of Parliament for Closter Constituency 098, Retired Captain Sylvester Boima, who thanked attendees for their commitment to community safety.

Captain Boima noted that the widespread use of KUSH and Tramadol among youths has contributed significantly to crime and lawlessness. “Our gathering is a testament to our fullest support as stakeholders in combating crime and restoring safety,” he said.

The Regent Chief of Njala Makonde, Mr. Philip Momoh, welcomed the engagement, describing it as the first time a Local Unit Commander (LUC) has held a direct security meeting with the community. He commended previous efforts to improve policing but acknowledged ongoing challenges with personnel and mobility.

The officer in charge of the Njala Makonde police post, D.S.P. Serry Karmal, provided an overview of community policing, emphasizing partnerships, proactive approaches, and preventive measures to address crime.

C.S.P. Sia Barnette Sandy, the newly transferred LUC for the Moyamba Division, highlighted her mandate to protect life and property impartially. She urged the community, especially mothers and youths, to engage in community policing initiatives such as reviving the Community Safety Volunteers (CSV). She also encouraged reporting of crimes, drug dealers, and stolen property.

“I am here because you are all very important. Whether you are a drug dealer or a criminal, it is your responsibility to resist such conduct,” she said, assuring that habitual offenders would be treated according to the law.

Detective Inspector Abdulai Jonathan Kebbie of the Moyamba Division praised the LUC’s proactive approach and pledged continued support. The meeting hall was filled with youths and stakeholders, all committing to support efforts to restore peace and safety in the community.
