Magistrate Manso Fornah of Court No. 2 has remanded Mohamed D. Kamanda at the Male Correctional Centre in connection with the alleged theft of a vehicle belonging to the Chief Whip of Parliament, Hon. Dixon Momoh Rogers.
According to police allegations, the offence occurred last year within the precincts of Parliament, where the accused is said to have stolen a MISANG jeep valued at 75,000 United States dollars, bearing registration number MRD 001, along with Le 20,000 (Twenty Thousand Leones) and a pair of sunglasses from the vehicle.
Kamanda was charged with larceny contrary to Section 2 of the Larceny Act of 1961. When the charge was read and explained to him in open court, he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution, led by State Counsel Sorie Conteh, called its first witness, Princess Christiana Dumbuya. In her testimony, she told the court that on January 5, 2026, she received a call from the Chief Driver informing her that Hon. Rogers’ vehicle was missing. Upon checking the Parliament logbook, it was discovered that the defendant had taken the vehicle in December, with his name and signature recorded in the logbook.
The witness further explained that efforts were made to locate the defendant, including inquiries made through Hon. Lamin’s wife, who reportedly said she had not seen him for a long time. Investigations later revealed that the defendant had a cousin named Abass, who shared pictures of a vehicle key and confirmed it matched the missing car.
Police were subsequently informed, and with Abass’ assistance, contact was made with the defendant. Abass reportedly told the accused that he had a potential buyer for the vehicle, to which the defendant allegedly demanded one hundred million leones, promising to give Abass a five-thousand-leone commission.
The operation concluded with police officers disguising themselves as buyers, leading to the arrest of the defendant in the Eastern part of Freetown. He later took the officers to a guest house, where he handed over the vehicle.
Magistrate Fornah refused bail and adjourned the matter to January 23, 2026, for further hearing.
