Police in Freetown have arrested four individuals accused of counterfeiting Sierra Leonean currency and unlawfully possessing firearms during a major operation targeting financial crimes and illegal arms.

The operation, conducted by officers from the Kissy Division in collaboration with the Wellington Police Post, led to the seizure of counterfeit banknotes, printing equipment, firearms, and ammunition. Authorities say the arrests reflect ongoing efforts to dismantle organized criminal networks undermining the country’s financial system.

According to police reports, between October 2024 and July 2025, the suspects identified as Umar Bamba Kamara, Joseph Kabia alias “Manager,” Alhaji Moseray Kabba, and Momon Kamara allegedly conspired to forge banknotes and circulate counterfeit currency across Freetown.

During the investigation, officers reportedly uncovered 250 fake twenty-Leone notes, a Glock 22 pistol with 44 live rounds, three laptops, and a printing machine believed to have been used for producing the counterfeit notes.

Inspector Lahai Bangura, who led the raid, said the arrests followed weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering.

“This operation demonstrates our vigilance in protecting citizens and the integrity of Sierra Leone’s financial system,” he stated.

Presiding Magistrate Mustapha Braima Jah, acknowledging the gravity of the offences, ordered that all four suspects be remanded at the Male Correctional Centre. The matter was adjourned to 24th October 2025.
