The Sierra Leone Police has disclosed that it had carried out an operation that led to the discovery of large quantity of timber logs in three different locations.

Chief Superintendent Alusine Conteh told the press that the discovery was made at three wharves in the North-west of the country.

Conteh said that they have deployed police officers on the shores of the North-western region of the country.

He added that the success of the operation could be attributed to a previous one done by the National Revenue Authority (NRA) early this year.

The Chief Superintendent said officers in the region are now monitoring checkpoints and other crossings.

He added that the officers are now conducting thorough checks on all timber lorries before they leave the region.

Sierra Leone is believed to be one of the most deforested rainforests in the world due to logging and the country, has however benefited little from the trade due to widespread uncontrolled and illegal logging.
