In a move aimed at empowering local representatives to engage in community development, the Port Loko District Council distributed a range of operational tools to its 28 councillors on October 8, 2024.
This initiative followed the conclusion of their regular monthly sitting, where councillors had previously expressed the need for resources to undertake minor projects in their constituencies.
The tools, which included wheelbarrows, hoes, cutlasses, shovels, rakes, pickaxes, and head pans, were handed out during a distribution event at the council compound.
The decision to provide these materials was a direct response to requests made by the councillors, who had sought assistance for carrying out small-scale activities in their respective localities.
The distribution was overseen by the council administration, ensuring an equitable allocation of the tools among the councillors. In addition, two escort vehicles were made available to assist those councillors traveling from distant areas within the district.
Councillor Sankoh, speaking at the event, emphasized the importance of appreciating the gesture, stating, “Accept a gift for the sentiment behind it, not its value.”
His remarks underscored the significance of the support provided, which is expected to enhance the councillors’ ability to contribute to minor community development projects.
The tools are intended to be used for activities such as cleaning, clearing, and other maintenance work, with councillors leading these efforts alongside youth groups in their localities. As the councillors return to their communities with these resources, they aim to drive visible progress in addressing local challenges and improving public spaces.
This distribution marks a step forward in equipping the councillors with the necessary tools to take an active role in fostering development at the grassroots level, reflecting the council’s commitment to supporting community-led initiatives.
