The Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issues (SLUDI) in Port Loko is raising urgent concerns over the lack of infrastructure and mobility support, hindering its efforts to empower persons with disabilities across the district.

The Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issues (SLUDI) in Port Loko is facing significant challenges that limit its ability to support persons with disabilities in the district.

The union operates without a functional office space and is urgently appealing for land to construct one. Additionally, the lack of a dedicated skills training center in Page District restricts opportunities for sustainable livelihoods among persons with disabilities.

Mobility remains a major obstacle, as many members lack motorbikes or other assistive devices needed for movement and independence.
“Without an office, training facilities, or mobility support, our efforts to empower persons with disabilities in Port Loko are severely hindered,” said the district chairman.

Despite these hurdles, SLUDI has achieved notable milestones through strategic partnerships. In collaboration with the Welfare Society for the Disabled (WESOFOD) in Kambia, the union launched the ‘Mi Chance Project,’ which supports children with disabilities in primary schools.

It also partnered with Street Child to provide educational assistance to disabled children aged 6 to 14.

SLUDI believes these successes demonstrate what can be achieved when opportunities are made available. However, the union emphasizes that much more support is needed to scale up its work in promoting inclusion and empowerment.

The organization is calling on the government, development partners, and the private sector to step forward and provide the resources necessary to expand efforts that improve the lives of persons with disabilities in Port Loko.
