Port Loko District has taken proactive measures to contain the spread of Mpox following the confirmation of a single case in the district, bringing the nationwide total to 14.

Dr. George, from the Port Loko Referral Hospital, shared the district’s response strategy during an interview with Radio Bankasoka.

Dr. George highlighted several key initiatives to prevent a wider outbreak, including sensitization of healthcare workers, establishing an isolation facility, and forming a survey team to monitor the community. Additionally, screening opportunities are being provided, and the hospital is extending its services to support these efforts, even though the facility is not primarily intended for this purpose.

George went on to encourage the community to hold onto awareness, accept the reality of the disease and “adhere to what health workers are advising especially hand washing.” He also assured residents that necessary medical equipment is in place and that patients would receive non-discriminatory care in treatment process.

While the confirmation of a case in Lungi Town has brought national attention to Port Loko, local residents have shown concern without widespread panic. The district remains vigilant, working in collaboration with healthcare authorities to ensure that the virus does not spread further.

The response in Port Loko reflects a well-coordinated effort to combat Mpox and protect the public, ensuring that residents are both informed and prepared.
