Two Nigerian inmates were apprehended on Tuesday after attempting to escape from the Pademba Road Magistrate Court.
Awoko reports that the incident occurred while the individuals were in custody awaiting a hearing before Magistrate Sahr Kekura at Court No. 1.
The two inmates, identified as Mohamed Rakim and Yusuf Sheik, were present in court on charges of unlawful possession of prohibited drugs. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the escape attempt took place while the men were being held in the court’s holding cell, shortly after they had been permitted to meet with two female visitors.
Sources reported that Rakim and Sheik attempted to discreetly leave the courthouse, reportedly trying to board motorbikes parked in the vicinity.
“They moved quickly and tried to board motorbikes parked nearby,” an eyewitness stated. “It was all very sudden – but a female officer noticed something was off and raised the alarm.”
The alert prompted an immediate response from correctional officers who were able to quickly surround and rearrest the two inmates before they could exit the court compound. The ensuing commotion drew the attention of court officials, journalists, and members of the public.
Police officers arrived at the scene to manage the situation and disperse the gathering crowd, restoring order to the court premises. Following the incident, all inmates present at the court were returned to the Pademba Road Correctional Centre as a precautionary security measure.
Court officials have confirmed that a full investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the security breach and to determine if any procedural lapses contributed to the attempted escape.
“The situation is fully under control,” a court official commented. “We are reviewing our protocols to ensure such incidents do not happen again.”
Mohamed Rakim and Yusuf Sheik remain in custody and are expected to face additional charges related to their failed escape attempt as the investigation progresses.
