After several press releases and letters calling on the police to conduct a speedy investigation into the bizarre death of Gillis Edwin Ola Johnson, an elderly senior teacher at Providence International School, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has informed Politico Newspaper that the main suspect, 17-year-old Aroun Conteh, will be charged with murder in the coming weeks.
Conteh, who was a student at the same school, was arrested after Johnson’s body was found in a pool of blood inside his living room. Initial police investigations placed the student at the alleged crime scene.
The police stated that they arrested Conteh after he went to the Aberdeen Police Station to report that the teacher had been killed by an officer from the Operational Support Division (OSD) of the Police. However, police evidence found inconsistencies in the boy’s narration after they arrived at the alleged crime scene and found the teacher dead with pierced wounds on his neck.
The investigation has been progressing slowly, prompting the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) to call on the police to urgently investigate the matter.
Johnson, who had taught for over 40 years, was mourned by the Union, who wore black garb in memoriam of his service in the teaching field.
