The Moyamba community has been left in mourning following the tragic suicide of a Junior Secondary School (JSS) 2 pupil from Saint Joseph Vocational Secondary School.

The young girl allegedly took her own life by hanging herself after reportedly becoming distraught when her mother confiscated her mobile phone.

According to sources, the girl’s mother took away the phone to ensure she focused on her studies, especially with exams approaching. Concerned that her daughter was spending too much time on the device rather than preparing for her exams, she made the difficult decision to remove it.

This action deeply upset the girl, prompting her to take her grievances to the area chief, Chief Brima. Reports indicate that she told the chief that her mother would “pay for what she has done.” In response, Chief Brima attempted to console her, advising her to concentrate on her studies and assuring her that he would discuss the matter with her mother after the exams.

Sadly, the following morning, the girl was found dead. She had left home dressed in her school uniform, appearing to be on her way to school, but was later discovered hanging from a tree in the town.

This tragic loss marks the second such suicide case in Moyamba in recent times, leaving the community in shock. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The incident highlights the urgent need for better communication and emotional support for young people, as experts stress the importance of addressing mental health concerns among students to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
